ZimLive.com, one of the country’s most prominent news sites for original and breaking news, has been selected for funding by Google. The publication was selected along with 2 other less prominent publications, Kwekwenet and The Mirror. It’s not clear which publication The Mirror is but it could be the Masvingo Mirror.

In April, as the potential scale of the COVID-19 pandemic became clear, Google announced a Journalism Emergency Relief Fund for local newsrooms covering and affected by the pandemic.

Yesterday, Google announced that more than 5,600 publications had been selected for the funding. It is not clear how much funding each of the Zimbabwean publications received. Google says however that it has provided a total of US $39.5 million to all the publications around the world.

For each publication, Google had indicated that “funding amounts will range from the low thousands for small hyper-local newsrooms to low tens of thousands for larger newsrooms, with variations per region.”
